CHAPTER ELEVEN

Ambrose pouted, his eyes drooping and mouth sticking out the way it did when he was about to sullenly protest something he considered unfair.

“Why do we have to do this? I’m your prisoner again. I’m in no position to leak any information to—”

“Because,” Dante snapped, cutting him off. “You’ve proven that you will leak information as soon as your position changes. Sparing your life is one thing. Trusting you is another. Now shut up and do as we say.”

The squat pilot sighed but said no more. Dante spread the strip of cloth over his eyes, then moved around behind him to tie it nice and tight.

Meanwhile, Nasreen put noise-canceling muffs over his ears. They attached themselves by pneumatic suction, and the flip of a switch freed them. Since they also functioned as hearing aids for the deaf or severely hearing-impaired, seeing a person wearing them wasn’t unusual. Of course, Ambrose’s hands were already tied behind his back, preventing him from taking the muffs off or altering their settings away from total silence.

Dante threw a large, hooded coat over Ambrose’s head and shoulders. The hood fell far enough in front to hide the blindfold. Pulling the torso portion forward mostly disguised his bound hands.

Nasreen nodded. “All right. Let’s move out.” She seated herself behind the thrustbike’s console. Ambrose slumped against her from behind while Dante mounted the bike beside her.

They had already conferred on where they were going. Dante had held a silent conversation with Midas on it, and Midas had sent a remote message to Nasreen’s sphere, making it unnecessary to say anything aloud.

They agreed that the safehouse in Celestial Seoul probably was no longer safe. They’d spent too much time there since they returned from their disastrous last Dirtside mission. By now it was likely that their enemies had discovered the place and begun to surveil it.

Nasreen had written back to Midas.

I have ways of checking on that, but we’ll have to get somewhere that is safe before we can be sure. Until then, there’s another location I haven’t used in a long time. I tend to keep it in reserve for emergencies, so it should be clear. I won’t say what it is over this line to be safe. Follow me.
